So my chair mock up is complete. It's not perfect, I have to learn more about upholstering, and instead of trusting a 4" back i went for 5" and it hits a bit too low in on your back when you sit against it. I know better for next time though! I'm pretty happy with it. I kind of wish school wasn't over this week... I'm going to miss making things...

I guess the up side of things you don't want happening happening is that you get to turn around and change focus. Lately, I've been having a hard time focusing on myself, and school, and my family; things i should focus on. I find it's hard to balance all of these things plus all the things life throws at you. I've been on this great quest for balance for the past year and I still haven't found it.

But there's been a change. And I guess, I can use it. The best thing you can do is use it. To find the advantage. Change direction and try again.

That's my new goal. To start again. To find the good. Continue seeking the balance, and hopefully, one day, if i keep at it, things might actually fall into place.

So my design came in second place. First place went to an adorable car print.
This week's contest is for Tessellation patterns. It was tricky coming up with something that fit into itself perfectly. But I like what I came up with in the end. I don't think it's a winner, it definitely doesn't fit the colour palette and look of most of the previous winners. I'm not saying they all look the same, just that there's definitely an aesthetic that seems to thread through the winning patterns.

I'm full of booyahs and bike bliss.
I realize it's late in the night, and I should absolutely be going to bed, but I kind of had a fantastic day. I'm all hopped up on fantastic-day. And this is it, this is the beginning of my favourite part of the year. The bikes come out, I get to rotate through my many spring jackets, and I start to take pictures again.

It's been a really long time since I've been on any late night bike roamings with my camera. I'm happy it's getting going again.

Spoonflower weeklies

So I've decided to use the Spoonflower fabric of the week contests as a way to force myself to sit down at the computer and make patterns again. I'm out of practice. I've been busy doing other things. Not necessarily important things... or necessary things... or productive things... but I have been busy. But now that I'm feeling it, it's time to get cracking on some actual work things. If only to keep the juices flowing.

The weekly theme was bugs. The deadline was today, when I got home friday night at 2 in the morning and couldn't sleep I decided to start on these. I finished them after work saturday and sent them in. The next one I'll actually think about before hand... so I should be able to do a bit better. But I think as a start, these'll do just fine.

I got a bunch of new pieces from the studio at home now. And this saturday I am going to churn out a whole bunch more. I'm really excited. It's been over two weeks since I've been in the studio hunched over a wheel. My last class all I did was glaze and glaze and glaze.

I've got four classes left, so I've got two weeks of wheel, one week of turning the bottoms and glazing, and then just glazing. Guess what everyone I know gets for Christmas this year? c'mon. Guess.

So that's it. All of my finished bears are up, there's a few that will be finished and posted over the next few weeks, but for the most part I'm done with paper bears.

Thinking about two things, one is large scale drawings, the other is oil painting.

I've only got four pottery classes left, I'm taking a break next session, so I won't be back to that until the spring, earliest. And that means all my creative energy can be put into whatever it is I choose to work on next. I want to do something exciting (to me) and different.

I'm at phase one: get the wheels turning.

One: I'm back to getting stuff done. It's been a long, long year... but I'm back in the swing of things as of today. I felt something in my gut make the switch. So buckle down mode is on and I'm getting things done.

I took a wheel throwing class for 8 weeks in the summer. I have some of the pieces at home, kind of just everywhere. And there are a bunch more at the studio that need glazing. I'm pretty happy with how my first session went, 8 weeks at only 3 hours a week, is not really a lot of time to get better at something. I'm probably going to try to do more. I just enjoy it so much. I've started thinking about it again because class starts in less than two weeks! I can't wait!

I had some prints (photos prints anyway...) made of some of my work and it looks awwwesome. I love them.

aaand, the birds are close to being completely finished. Three more patterned backgrounds and then the matting, framing and finishing and I go into the cafe monday morning and put them up. Just like that.

I've got a craft fair this weekend, so I finally made some new prints. I'm really, really happy about the colour of this gray-blue version. Lesson to learn. Work to prioritize. And I've got new things coming, I don't want to flash the paper project around yet, I'm planning on having my first ever solo show.

God help me, I can't stop drawing birds. But at least I'm doing something I think is a nice development on the underwater series, mixed with my last bird trios (which I'm going to print soon and will be available at my etsy shop shortly thereafter)

After last night's panic I managed to do something I never used to be able to do. A poster in just two days. From first brain ponderings to a final product. It used to take ages. I'm starting to feel that thing happen where I can draw confidently in less time, get things done more quickly but just as well, maybe even better sometimes. And it feels good. And I'm very very happy with this one.

I officially don't do enough.

I've been having a good six months of not having a full time job for the first time in something like 6 years... and it's been super. And I really have been busy. BUT. but, there's always the but. Not busy enough if you ask me. Or really what it is is not productive enough. I haven't printed anything since the show in March, I've been doing a lot of drawing and posters, but I totally put printing aside. Which means I have this studio I'm just not using at all since I do most of my drawing at home. I think I need to get back to it, but then I wonder when? I've got two posters I want to get done this for this weekend. I'm working on a pilot and have some scouting and shopping coming up. I just started hockey on wednesdays again. I still (believe it or not - this has been taking me way too long) STILL have to finish Macleod's website. And there's a long list of others.

So I guess what it boils down to is I'm not feeling as productive as I'd like to even though I'm still working away. I'm going in soon. It's settled. I'm going to clean out my old screens, no more of those are getting print so I'm through, and then I'm on to newer things. Bigger, better things. Back at it in full Dayna fashion. Too much on my plate and happy as can be.

ps. tonight was my first night back since a year and a half ago at hockey and I scored a goal. now i need a hot bath with some epsom salts and a good nights rest. it's going to be hard to walk the next couple of days.

Poster, work, work, and more work

So I've got a lot going on. Somethings that are more slow going than others, but I'm sure well worth the time they take. Sometimes there are projects that just need me to mull them over and over and over for weeks while I work out the kinks in my head before I have to work out the kinks on paper/computerscreen. Then sometimes a poster can take like no time at all. I'm glad I'm not so anal as I used to be about using fonts. Hand drawing/writing everything always isn't as necessary as I assumed. And it's a good thing.

oh, and Chinatown pitted all their artist friends against one another in a race to come up with a tshirt design for them asap.
I've got another one cooking and it should be done real soon, but this one's almost done I just need to do that mulling it over thing before I ship it off to the boys for approval.

There are some of the many wonderful album covers up on my flickr site. I can't post them all here, but I will post a couple. I am so so so happy at how this turned out, how many people showed up to help colour in the covers and how great they all look. Some of the crazier ones aren't sewn up and I'll be taking pictures of them next week when I get home from Toronto, but for now there's a good number up there.

Here I am doodling birds when I should be making a CV and looking for work. But I can't stop procrastinating. Normally, I'm not one to hold back on getting something done. I mean, I like ticking things off my to-do lists like no one I know, but I can't bring myself to even open the file.

Maybe soon. I think I'll make it today's goal. No more fun drawing until that CV is done.

A Long, Long Week

After one heck of a long week of art direction assisting (I had to build walls!) and background acting and hanging by craft tables around Montreal it's a wrap. So now it's all back to full on Dayna work. No more 16 hour days. No more wall building, no more couch hunting. No more standing for hours. It was fun and all, but I've got stuff to do.

The film is probably going to get edited soon and ready for screening in the Fall. I'll likely be announcing here.

I've started printing some of my drawings. I don't have that many since I've been so focused on the underwater series, but I'm going to make sure I have a good little collection before I start releasing them. I think these look great though so test run gets my approval and there will be more to come!

I was in the studio today and finally got started printing the seahorses. Finally. I reworked the design so it'd be a cleaner print as a smaller image. The previous one had far too tiny lines in it to make it smaller, but as it happens, I might like the new one better. It's like it's 'less' it's just different. I'm going to try a couple different colour ways before I start posting them to my Etsy shop.
